If you are ever in Georgetown, South Carolina (about halfway between Charleston and Myrtle Beach) and you are looking for a great meal, let me recommend Rice Paddy. The food and service was excellent in a refined yet casual way.
The restaurant is housed partially in what looks like and old bank (the wine celler is clearly in a walk in vault). The flooring is a mixture of old time tile and hardwood with large windows and very tall ceilings as was the custom for period commercial buildings. The service is white tablecloth with lots of people attentively removing dishes and keeping our water and iced tea glasses filled.
I started with a Shrimp and Corn Chowder that was excellent. The shrimp was perfectly tender and the chowder was rich with corn and potato and had a creamy sweetness to it. Next I had Tuna, grilled in a soy based sauce topped with green onion. The fish was nicely prepared and was very delicious. I also tried some of their crab cakes and they were excellent as well.
For dessert, I had a cherry tart that was basically a dish of cherries covered with a layer of something that wasn't quite custard but wasn't quite cake. It was topped with ice cream and made for a nice pairing. I also tried some of the chocolate brownie topped with ice cream. It was very rich and moist. There were lots of mmmms and awwws while this was consumed.
I would definitely make the trip down to visit this place again. My only complaint was that there wasn't sweet tea available.
