I just did my first solo diaper change. Man that was foul. Somehow I didn't ruin every surface within a 3 meter radius of the soiled nappy. That is all.

My secret: use as many wipes as YOU think you need to get the job done. If that is five, ten, or a whole box, so be it.

You get used to the activity, though never the smell.
By this point, I can change one in the dark with my eyes closed, without waking the little one up. At some point after you've done sixty zillion or so, you just don't really notice anymore. :)
